The £1000 from BPEOSA Educational Projects Fund towards a spinal board and head blocks meant we began training with the equipment as soon as it was delivered.

The students have found this training incredibly helpful and practical, especially as they had to observe and apply this newfound knowledge when one of our players was knocked unconscious in one of the fixtures that followed and had to be extricated from the field of play.

Subsequently, the player has recovered, and the hands-on nature of the student learning process has shown to be invaluable to developing student sports rehabilitators who are calm and confident under pressure, because they can rely on their skills.

Players have benefited with a positive shift in the medical support and provision at the club this year, where previously head and spinal injuries had resulted in medical staff stabilising a player on the field of play for hours whilst waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Now the students can take the player off the pitch on the spinal board and support the health and wellbeing of the player inside rather than being exposed to the elements and potentially suffering from shock.

I have continued to utilise Bedford Tigers training sessions to provide students with hands-on training. The more training completed using the spinal board and head blocks, the more confident and efficient the students are becoming in their handling skills. These tools have made a distinct positive impact to the students, the players and the club as a whole – Thank you!”
